Acoustic Artisanry

Handcrafted in Japan, the flagship FG9 steel-string acoustic guitar's extraordinary projection, clarity and responsiveness make it an ideal instrument for singer-songwriters.

Handcrafted in Japan, the flagship FG9 M dreadnought steel-string acoustic guitar features an Adirondack spruce top complemented by mahogany back, sides, and neck. It produces a warm tone with a strong fundamental and enhanced midrange—and its extraordinary projection, clarity, and responsiveness to playing dynamics make it an ideal instrument for singer-songwriters. Cutting-edge acoustic measurement and 3D structural measurement processes were employed while designing the FG9 M, a level of scientific measurement and analysis unique to Yamaha. Deluxe appointments and traditional Japanese aesthetic details such as a rope rosette ensure that the guitar is as inspiring to behold as it is to play.

Strong Projection and Clear Top End

The FG9 delivers outstanding projection characteristic of dreadnought-style instruments, while at the same time providing exceptional clarity and detailed articulation—a unique combination especially suited for accompanying vocals.

Adirondack Spruce Tops with Tapered Edges

FG9 models feature Adirondack spruce top boards with tapered edges, providing structural strength while allowing the body to vibrate more efficiently—a combination that contributes to both power and sensitivity.

Bolt-On Neck Joint

The neck has a new structural design that combines bolt-on and glued construction to increase body vibration and improve maintainability. Neck and body joints are finished and adjusted with high precision.

Elegant, Understated Japanese Aesthetic

The distinctive fingerboard inlays resemble traditional Japanese Kumiki woodworking, while the rope-shaped inlay and purfling on the rosette is a motif deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

Scientific Approach Integrated with Luthier Techniques

When designing the FG9, we employed cutting-edge acoustic and 3D-stuctural measurement processes to more fully understand how physical structure affects acoustic characteristics. Repeated prototypes were built by our custom shop’s skilled luthiers.
