High-quality Microphones for A-B/X-Y recordings

High-quality unidirectional stereo condenser microphones that can record in both A-B and X-Y positions according to the situation

TASCAM DR-40 is equipped with adjustable unidirectional microphones for recording in an X-Y pattern for tight stereo imaging or in an A-B pattern for a more ambient recording. Advanced microphone placing allows for a wide stereo sound recording or a clear stereo sound recording with less phase difference, making it possible to achieve professional quality recordings, and the left and right channels automatically flip for correct stereo placement when flipping the microphone orientation A-B or X-Y.

Another handy additions include a tripod mount on its back and a chromatic tuner for musicians.
DR-40

Proven high sound pressure design for capturing loud sounds of up to 125dB SPL, making it ideal for loud band recordings

Proven high sound pressure design that is perfect for loud recordings such as bands or passing trains. It can be used for recoding quiet sound sources such as lectures or for loud sound sources such as rock bands.
DR-40

MS decoding function making it possible to use M-S stereo microphones

In addition to the A-B/X-Y positions, there is a system for stereo recording using a combination of the omnidirection and bidirectional microphones, and an MS decoding function for connecting microphones for M-S recording.

*M-S type microphone is not included.

Versatile recording functions

Peak reduction function that detects peaks and automatically sets the optimal level

The peak reduction function automatically lowers the level when a peak sound is detected and continues recording. The level can be set automatically according to the sound source, so it is easy for anyone to set the optimal level. The DR-40 has a total of three different input signal level adjustment functions including a peak reduction function.

Peak reduction

When a peak is detected, the input signal level is automatically lowered and recording continues. It is perfect for music recordings that have variation in volume, which can be difficult to listen to.
DR-40
Auto level The input signal level is automatically adjusted according to the input sound volume. This is perfect for recording meetings.
Limiter Prevents distortion of excessively high input signals.

4-channel mode that can be used for dual recording and nondestructive overdub recording, etc.

In addition to normal stereo channel recordings, the DR-40's four-track recording mode gives you several options to record, indicated by LEDs on the front of the unit.

Dual Recording Mode

The same sound source can be recorded at two different levels. This gives you a safety stereo track you can use in case the main recording is distorted..

DR-40

Dual Recording records a second copy of your performance up to -12dB lower as a safety track. This mean if your recording gets accidentally distorted, you'll have a backup copy that isn't distorted.
Dual Recording works in addition to the peak limiting and low cut filter features which also prevent distortion. The Dual Recording mode is perfect for recording your band live. Just set the unit to record and hit the stage without worrying about the recording getting blown out.

DR-40

4CH Mode

Two different stereo materials can be recorded simultaneously. Combination of the sources is flexible, recording the built-in microphones along with a pair of external Mics, like close-up and ambient microphones, or recording the built-in Mics along with a balanced line input, such as the feed from a mixer along with the sound in the room..

DR-40

Overdubbing Mode

A new sound source can be recorded as a separate channel while listening to a pre-recorded sound source. This is perfect for music production or song demo.

DR-40

Flexible playback functions

Tempo change (VSA) function for adjusting the speed from 0.5 to 1.5 times (in 0.1 increments), which is great for practicing music and language study

Includes TASCAM's popular VSA (Variable Speed Audition) function from the Trainer Series. The playback speed can be adjusted without affecting the pitch. This is helpful in various situations such as when arranging and practicing music, for slowing the speed of recorded conversations, and for speeding up playback of meetings.
DR-40
* The VSA function is only available when playing back files recorded at 44.1kHz/48kHz.

Level align feature prevents uneven volume levels for enhanced listenability

When recording meetings or interviews, there are cases where it is difficult to listen to the playback because the volumes of different people vary. In such cases, the level align function automatically adjusts the sound volume for playback, making it easy to listen to raw and unmastered recordings.

DR-40

More useful playback features

Like most TASCAM handheld recorders, the DR-40 includes playback modes to loop a section of playback or slow it down without changing the pitch, perfect for learning new music. A built-in speaker is included for checking recording without headphones. A stereo reverb effect is available during playback or recording.

More professinal-grade features and Expandability

Locking XLR/TRS inputs compatible with +4dBu line level / +48V phantom power

In addition to the built-in microphone, the DR-40 has a set of highly reliable locking XLR/TRS connectors by NEUTRIK® for Mic inputs. These external inputs can accept balanced microphone or line inputs from Mixers or PA console. The microphone preamp includes phantom power and plenty of gain for detailed recordings with condenser microphones, as well as electret type microphones.
DR-40
The DR-40 is one of the only handheld recorders with a balanced line input, for recording the output of a console or other pro audio source. In 4-channel recording mode, you can record the output of a live console while capturing the sound of the room with the built-in microphones.
DR-40

Optional RC-3F foot switch and RC-10 wired remote control can be connected

Though the DR-40 has everything you need to start recording – including remote control unit and AA battery pack – a host of available accessories make recording in the field even easier. The Remote connector on the DR-40 can be used for connecting the optional RC-3F and RC-10 remotes. Hands-free transport control and recording operations can be performed away from the unit.
