And these qualities make it an ideal mobile solution for recording gigs, choirs, concerts or field recordings. With the D-PRE mic preamp, the UR22mkII is equipped to offer a sumptuously detailed sound far beyond what is normally expected of compact interfaces in this price class. And despite its modest size it features switchable phantom power and thus allows you to connect a wide variety of microphones — up to the most expensive condenser mics. All AD/DA conversion is accomplished using choice components that deliver a transparent, detailed sound that does full justice to the original source.

The power to perform

The UR22mkII is designed for touring bands, gigging guitarists and mobile DJs. This compact interface fits snugly into your bag or case yet thanks to its steel casing, it’s virtually indestructible.

The UR22mkII offers the same performance hallmarks of as its bigger siblings, the UR824 and the UR28M, such as premium-quality D-PRE preamps, switchable phantom power, a Hi-Z input for guitar and bass recording as well as 24/192 sound quality. Take it to your rehearsal space or your next gig or show — wherever you are, the UR22mkII provides breathtaking audio quality and reliability.

Enjoy high-resolution audio

The UR22mkII offers the same sonic precision, clarity of tone and flawless dynamics as the other members of the UR family. Hooking up the UR22mkII to a pair of high-quality headphones will let you listen to your music collection with a new sense of perspective. This is thanks to the incredible sonic fidelity offered by 24-bit resolution and a sample rate of up to 192kHz. Each component of the AD and DA conversion stages has been selected to offer astounding quality; simply hook up your high-quality speakers or headphones to the appropriate output on the UR22mkII to lend your music collection a new lease of life.

The best for beats

Producers of electronic or beat-based music will find their ideal mobile interface in the form of the UR22mkII. Rock-solid drivers allow you to run VSTis at very low latencies, while the onboard MIDI I/O lets you connect synths, vintage drum machines, MIDI controllers or any other MIDI gear. Plug in a mic or electric guitar to record vocals or guitar parts, all in perfect sync with MIDI data from your project, and recorded with no latency and with the convenience of the Mix monitoring control on the front panel. And because of the outstanding sound quality of components like the amazing D-PRE preamp and the AD/DA converters, any audio you record is at studio quality, meaning you won’t have to go to a studio to re-record it later.

In the club, on the stage

Because it’s been designed to offer so much versatility, the UR22mkII is a perfect companion for live shows and gigs for DJs, guitarists, bands, drummers and just about any other kind of live performer.

One of the most important features here is the monitoring architecture: independent headphone and output controls mean you have all your audio channels under full control. This means that, say, bands sending backing tracks to the FOH mixer have an independent headphone output for the band member operating the laptop. Guitarists needing a reliable interface for live shows can plug directly into the Hi-Z input and route the audio to a virtual amp such as the VST Amp Rack in Cubase. You can even start and stop playbacks or record loop-based tracks on the fly by connecting a MIDI footswitch to begin a hands-free recording session. And thanks to its steel casing, the UR22mkII can take the little knocks and scratches that are bound to happen when you take your equipment onstage.

With both main audio inputs on Channel 1 and 2 implemented as combo connectors, you can plug in a large number of different audio sources in parallel. Let’s take a songwriting duo made up of a singer and a guitarist improvising a song when composing a new album. Here an electric guitar is plugged into Input 2 with Hi-Z mode engaged, while a studio condenser mic is plugged into Input 1, with both heard over the monitor speakers with no latency. Or Inputs 1 and 2 could be used to record a choir or small orchestra by using two well-placed condenser microphones to capture a larger performance space.

Technology

Sharing the same heritage as the highly acclaimed MR816 interfaces, the URs house outstanding converters and D-PRE Class-A discrete mic preamps. Each interface is completely adapted to your needs while sharing the hallmarks of the UR range: great build quality, stunning sound and flexible, fully integrated capabilities. Ultra-stable drivers for Mac OS X and Windows mean that the entire UR range supports all major recording software applications.

D-PRE microphone preamps

All UR audio interfaces offer D-PRE Class-A discrete mic preamps from Yamaha. The D-PRE is carefully designed to capture all the subtleties and expressiveness of any audio source and is the culmination of years of development by the experienced engineers at the Yamaha Corporation.

The preamp is where sound creation begins in recording, and ultimately determines the quality of your mix. D-PRE Mic Preamps sound stunning, and the difference is in the design. Usually, preamps use one transistor each for the hot and cold signals at the input stage to amplify the signal. However, the D-PREs specified on Steinberg audio interfaces use an inverted Darlington circuit, where two transistors are used for each hot and cold — a total of four per unit. With only one transistor on a preamp circuit, distortion tends to increase along with the signal level. By using a pair of two cascaded transistors, very low distortion can be maintained regardless of signal level.

Some users might look for a microphone preamp to dramatically color the sound while others search for a very neutral response. For example, some highly sought after vintage microphone preamps excel at amplifying certain components of a given source, imparting a generous amount of color to the signal. Such a preamp might be great for a vocal recording, however those preamps will not suit every use.

D-PRE has a very wide frequency range so that it can handle any music source and it does not overly amplify any specific components of the signal. It’s beautifully tuned to be able to capture the true expression of a given performance or audio source, while leaving flexibility for later editing. The end result is that D-PRE provides a sound that is a perfect amalgamation of understated signal enhancement combined with impeccable sonic integrity. The development team took a lot of time to adjust this subtle balance and the D-PRE sound quality speaks for itself.

Loopback function

For easy live streaming of performances to the internet, the Loopback function consolidates all playback tracks and input channels and routes the mix to your internet streaming software. This function is often used by hosts of internet live streaming programs. When the function is active, incoming audio signals such as microphone, guitar or line source will be merged to the playback signal from an audio playback software like Cubase or other DAWs inside the computer. The merged signal will then be send back to the computer for streaming.

192 kHz

All components are carefully selected and implemented for full resolution of high-end audio of up to 24-bit/192 kHz. A higher sampling frequency means more samples of the audio source, resulting in better reproduction of the original sound, contributing to the naturalness of audio image and ambience.

CC Mode

All UR interfaces can be switched to CC (Class Compliant) mode*. In this mode the interfaces work with the iPad and iPhone. Combining the UR units with an iOS audio application, such as Steinberg’s Cubasis for iPad, you get a fully mobile audio recording solution.
